PROGRAMMERS NOTES
How does one reckon with the bigoted views of a person in whose work you find solace? For his debut feature, Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker Qais Pasha traces the life and career of 20th century sci-fi writer HP Lovecraft, while at the same time trying to make sense of the author’s divisive legacy. A known racist and white supremacist, Lovecraft has a legion of fans who belong to communities of colour, including Pasha himself. Using archival footage, interviews, animation and cleverly stylized reenactments, Pasha deconstructs Lovecraft (and his superfans) in a way that’s not just innovative but simultaneously critical and heartfelt.
